A photography exhibition “Paraiškos / Applications” by Alvydas Donėla will open on December 4th, 5:30 pm, at the Vilnius Photography Gallery (Stiklių g. 4 / Didžioji g. 19).

The exhibition will feature works in the eponymous series that was created from 2016 to 2018. Alvydas Donėla is interested in the aspects of the complex take on photography’s creative processes. “Paraiškos / Applications” is a certain search for ways to talk about photography through dynamic principles that encourage us to imagine future opportunities and to contrast those opportunities with the perfection of a complete, static essence.

The creative process takes A. Donėla closer to the moment of past and present meanings expressing themselves in an absolutely identical way; this gives the counterbalance back to the author in relation to the forces imprisoning photography in memory, at the same time summoning the liberating action of generating images. Timeless photography becomes timely, whereas the perception of images in the present – operating within the suggested uncertainty and avoiding traps of nostalgic memory – begins producing alive images that shatter the linear chronology of memory and time. Conditions like these result in the tension arising within photographic imagery, giving the chance to experience complex photographic time that stretches not only into the past but also into the future, possibly even breaking the typical laws of mathematical, linear time.

The author considers applications to be a particular point of understanding that includes the direction of time yet can’t guarantee any concrete results. It’s a specific act of making the action more relaxed, a form or a method to provoke or summon change, empowering us to delve deeper than just into the cyclical stability.

Alvydas Donėla (b. 1980) studied applied photography at Vilnius College of Design, and graduated from Vilnius Academy of Arts as a master of photography and media art. Living and creating in Vilnius, he has been a member of the Lithuanian Photographers Association since 2018.
